In the beginning of March, the DHH program hosted a special Deaf guest from Yokohama, Japan. Taeko Sato talked to our students about what it was like growing up as a deaf person in Japan. She shared her experiences of being sent to a residential school for deaf children where she was not allowed to learn sign language. Her teachers instructed through oral/aural methods and did not sign. Ms. Sato felt that her education was very limited as she did not understand much of what was being taught to her. She also shared her family’s hardships of living in Japan post World War II, losing two of her siblings due to starvation and illness. Taeko also taught our students some Japanese Sign Language (JSL). Our students and staff really enjoyed Ms. Sato’s visit.
