Many of our Venado students ride their bikes, skateboards and scooters to and from school. This is a great way to be independent, responsible, and healthy. We also want students to be safe and protect their property. The City of Irvine has great resources about safety, bicycle laws, and bike registration. Here are some highlights:
* Always wear and secure a helmet when riding a bike - it’s the law for anyone under 18 (this includes anything with wheels - bikes, skateboards, scooters, etc.).
* Lock your bicycle in the bike rack using a strong bike lock.
* Walk your bike on school grounds.
* Students may ride their bikes on public sidewalks, but need to be aware of walking pedestrians. Bicyclists also need to be aware of cars while crossing streets, driveways, and parking lot entrances.
* No using cell phones while riding bikes. The “Hands Free” law applies to bike riders too!
* Register your bicycle. It’s a law in Irvine and helps with property recovery.
