The OCDE DHH Total Communication Program provides instruction for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from 7th – 12th grade. Venado DHH 7th and 8th graders commence to University High School for their 9th – 12th grade years. January was a very exciting month for some of our former Venado students when they were surprised by the Helpful Honda People during a flag football practice. Earlier this year, a former Venado DHH student petitioned the administration to set up a flag football team for DHH students. After receiving approval, coaches and students got to work, practicing hard and competing in league games for several months. Their hard work and dedication advanced them into the championship game, however, they would have to do it without team uniforms. Finances were limited and did not allow a budget for uniforms as this was the first year for the University High DHH. Seeing this problem, one of the DHH program interpreters/coaches reached out to the Helpful Honda People. Moments before the University DHH Flag Football team stepped onto the field for their championship game, the Helpful Honda People presented them with brand-new uniforms, shoes, and water bottles. Students and staff were beyond surprised and ecstatic by the generous gift. In the end, players walked off the field wearing their brand-new uniforms and carrying the league championship trophy. It was an amazing day! Thanks, Helpful Honda People – You made our day!!
